Albany High School Business Alliance
We are making big changes at Albany High School (AHS) in order to address the needs of our students and the business community by focusing on long-term goals that successfully bridge the gap between the classroom, postsecondary education and the workplace. It is critical that we work together to ensure that the next generation of employees and leaders are well prepared to confront the social and economic issues of the future. We believe the local business community's insight, expertise, and concern for the future of our community and/or industry will contribute to the success of AHS’s four academies and our Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs.
To that end, we have established the "Albany High School Business Alliance" which consists of five advisory committees; one for the overall high school and one for each academy. The AHS committee is named the Business Alliance Advisory Council. The other four committees are named by their academy name: Innovation Business Committee, Discovery Business Committee, Citizenship Business Committee and Leadership Business Committee. These committees support the high school and each academy as they work towards fulfilling their vision and associated career pathways. There are one set of by-laws and one set of standard operating procedures.
The Business Alliance Advisory Council and four Academy Business Committees consist of industry, colleges and universities, community leaders, educators, students, parents, and alumni that partner with AHS. Members volunteer time and other resources to help prepare students for college and careers. There are more than 2000 students in AHS that will benefit from business partnerships.
The AHS Business Alliance, a unique partnership model was created to impact three areas, including: strengthening school leadership; building school capacity; and enhancing student learning in order to ensure students for college and career ready. The AHS Business Alliance works collaboratively with principals, teachers and students to build strong leaders. They build school capacity through the use of parent involvement, fundraising opportunities, developing strong academy cultures, and supporting the use of current technology. They also provide curriculum enhancement as well as college and career preparation.
More specifically, the AHS Business Alliance will make recommendations regarding the development and expansion of academy programs, student equity, curriculum and teacher training. They will assist with raising funds, recruiting students, securing internships and scholarships, and providing in-kind contributions to the local academy program. Lastly, the AHS Business Alliance is an integral part of the experiential learning activities for all academy students; bridging the gap between the classroom and the “real world.”
