"The Passport to Safety Program is a statewide effort of the New York
State (NYS) Young Workers Safety and Health Project, a group of
government agencies, health organizations, non-profit organizations,
unions and worker advocacy groups.* The Passport to Safety Program is an
online health and safety training course. The course has been designed
to train New York’s teens about workplace safety and health and labor
laws. Although new to New York, Passport to Safety has been used with
success in other locations such as Canada and Australia.
The online training course gives young workers information on
possible hazards in the workplace. It also tells them what their
employers must do to provide them with a safe environment. As teens
begin their first jobs, it is important that they understand general
health and safety rules. The course will help show young workers how to
identify and control hazards, and speak to employers if they come across
unsafe work conditions. It is also important that they know what they
can and cannot do under the child labor laws in New York.
Passport to Safety is a self paced training course. It is an educational tool that utilizes both on-line and optional teacher-led student-centered classroom lessons to educate New York’s teens about workplace safety and health and labor laws. It works through a school, apprenticeship program or workplace education program. After completion of the training course the young worker will be provided a Passport to Safety certificate that shows her or his basic awareness of workplace health and safety. We hope that a Passport to Safety certificate will provide a benefit to teens seeking jobs as employers recognize the value of this education.
