Electrical Technologies I is designed to educate students about electrical technology by a Comprehensive selection of courses. At this level, students learn: basic electrical theory, wiring methods and materials, national and local electrical codes, and print layout. The students gain the experience to install receptacles, switches, lighting, and service entrance Conductors. While working with the various circuits for both residential and commercial facilities, students learn to work safely around electricity and to use the proper tools for residential and commercial wiring.

Electrical Technologies II continues with the curriculum of Electrical Technologies I and advances our understanding of the use of electricity in commercial and industrial applications. The course enhances the student’s knowledge and understanding of electrical theory and prepares the students to take advantage of any of more than a dozen different career areas. Students will have opportunities to job shadow experts (Senior year only) working in different areas in electrical technologies as well as participate in a wide variety of lab and shop projects. Advanced aspects of: the national electrical code, commercial wiring design, protection, commercial building plans, and specifications. Students continue to expand their knowledge of special electrical systems. The students also estimate the cost of more complex electrical installations, which is an integral portion of an electrician’s business. Students master the conduit manipulation skills necessary for commercial electrical installations and utilize electrical trainers to enhance their skills in areas of emergency lighting, fire alarms, and security alarms. The course instructs students on the advanced aspects of the national electrical code as it relates to industrial wiring design and protection. At this level, students are taught introductory aspects of industrial building plans and specifications. The students work safely around electricity and use the proper tools for commercial and industrial wiring. This course teaches students how to plan for the proper amount of lighting necessary to properly illuminate an area according to the national electrical code. The students also explore methods of indirect lighting, such as accent lighting and low-voltage lighting. The students continue to use their drafting skills to design reflective ceiling plans and alternative lighting designs for houses and businesses. Electrician apprentices can start at $13 per hour and journeymen electricians make in excess of $40 per hour. Students who complete two years of Electrical Technologies with sufficiently high grades are granted advanced credit in HVCC’s EC&M program. Students may also choose to enter into a private apprenticeship or an electrical union apprentice programs. Students who excel will be introduced to the process of sitting for the entrance exam to become a union residential or commercial electrician, which offer excellent pay and benefits.
510 Home Electronics/Theater (1 Credit)
Grades 11-12 - PREREQ: 507/508
This course is an introduction to home security, theater, and multimedia electronic systems. Systems covered will be wireless, remote activation and alarms, motion sensors and contact sensors. Students will learn to properly install, adjust, locate components, balance, troubleshoot and repair home audio systems. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of electrical and electronic terminology as it relates to audio sound systems,
home security and home theatre systems. This course incorporates hands-on training and practical application process.
